One can consult Imams to learn how to repent in Islam and then return to what Allah has instructed. The word tawbah (to return) is prominent in the Quran and Hadiths, and it refers to turning away from evil and unholy activities and firmly avoiding them in the future. It’s crucial to the development of a human soul and its journey towards Allah.
According to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), God says, I take two steps toward My servant every time he takes one step toward Me. And as soon as he walks up to me, I run up to him. A believer is said to be able to make tawbah not only when committing a sin, but also when performing a good deed. The tawbah represents genuine and devoted repentance that is free of sanctimony and insincerity.
Tawbah Defined
Tawbah’s literal meaning is “to return.” The word appears numerous times in the Holy Quran and several hadiths. Tawbah is associated with the word ‘Nasuh’ in the Holy Quran. That means to “purify” or “make sincere.” It is understandable that Tawbah aids in the repentance of sinful and wrongdoing. The person performing Tawbah surrenders in front of Almighty Allah and begs His forgiveness for straying from the path of righteousness.
In Islam, the Importance of Repentance: Quran Verses
According to the Islamic scripture Quran, those who believe they have committed any wrongdoing or misdeed against Allah’s commandments can sincerely repent and seek Allah’s forgiveness. According to the Quranic verses.
• What about you, Believers? If you turn your hearts and minds to God, you will find Bliss. Al-Quran
• Without a doubt, God loves those who give much (to Him), as well as those who purify themselves. Al-Quran
• God accepts the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and repent quickly; to them will God turn in mercy; for God is full of knowledge and wisdom. The repentance of those who continue to do evil has no effect until one of them dies. Now I’ve truly repented, he says, nor of those who die denying Faith. For them, we have prepared a most grievous punishment. Al-Quran
Conditions for Repentance in Islam
When a person performs tawbah with sincerity and devotion, Allah accepts it, according to Sharia (Islamic law). The tawbah is made up of six parts:
1. to be sorry for one’s evil deed.
2. To perform saintly duties that have been neglected.
3. To reclaim rights and property obtained unfairly from others.
4. Seeking forgiveness from those who have been treated unfairly by you.
5. Accepting responsibility for avoiding future wrongdoing, and
6. To keep himself/herself in Allah’s good graces.
Tawbah is a two-edged technique that requires a person to recognize his or her error and abandon it in order to seek Allah’s forgiveness. A faithful person perceives his sins as if he were sitting beneath a mountain that he is afraid will collapse on him, said Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Whereas the wicked person sees his sins as flies passing over his nose. And he simply drives them away like this (moving his hand over his nose). Sahih al-Bukhari
