The long-awaited arrival of Rockstar’s console sensation Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC is finally here. After a one-year waiting period, PC gamers are now able to experience the genre-defining adventure of Arthur Morgan and his formidable horde of outlaws and criminals. It makes no sense that with Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar might not only have set the gold standard for what could be an open-world game, but the studio has stymied its previous games in far too many aspects. I have adopted. After spending nearly two weeks in the expanding world of RDR2, I can now understand why the game still ranks at the top of the highest-rated games on both PS4 and Xbox One.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Ultimate Special Edition Review
Craft‘s Masters explains how it’s done:
As practical inventors of the modern open-world genre, Rockstar still remains at the top of the pack when it comes to the understanding that the popular gameplay setting is capable of offering well beyond traditional, linear games. While many games feature a large game map that at times offers much more than unnecessarily long traversals for missions coupled with nice vistas, the unique and varied areas of hobbies in RDR 2 enable wildly different gameplay styles. We do. It is huge like a package that includes multiple games at once. And we wouldn’t go completely wrong with that train of thought.

For the first time ever, Rockstar has included meaningful and deep survival in one of its premiere franchises. It is not as complex or attention-seeking, unlike competing titles that are firmly established in the genre of survival. You don’t need to subtly understand all aspects of your player’s bodily functions, needs, or illnesses. By giving additional depth to how the player’s three stats or cores (Stamina, Health, and Dead Eye) work and can be affected, we get a rare occurrence where the player’s actions and the player character’s world align in a cohesive block. it occurs. Eating, drinking nectar, and clothing that suits his surroundings are logical and important factors in maximizing Arthur’s potential. It would be easy to apply these mechanics to menus half-heartedly, But Rockstar went a long way and built deep hunting, fishing, and crafting mechanics. The combination of these forms a living flora and fauna that permeates the entirety of the world. Gathering specific plants and roots to cook a unique meal that can fill your zombies all at once, never drag extra activities.
Of course, there’s a much easier way to meet these needs for players who aren’t involved in extensive side activities such as buying elixirs, medicine, and food at many of the world’s general stores. This way, players can focus their full attention and time on the more cinematic and action-packed parts, of which there are plenty. Expect a wild ride with one of the best Wild West adventures, video games, and cinema ever conceived. We don’t want you to enjoy having a first-hand experience, so we want to avoid going into further detail at this point. But rest assured that Rockstar has once again surpassed its stellar track record of previous blockbuster campaigns from GTA V and the likes. Jaws dropped several times in amazement. rough Rider:
Before we get to the flesh and bones of the PC review, we’ll direct you to our original review of Red Dead Redemption 2 for the console. You can get a more in-depth look at the mechanics of the game and the story there. Since the PC version is essentially the same game, we use this opportunity to take a look at what makes the PC version, in particular, stand out.

First, respect your year-long patience if you persisted in a self-imposed media blackout for all things RDR 2, but here’s what you need to know about Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC. The launch of the game for PC on November 5th, soon after a large number of gamers complained about various technical difficulties. Many of these are because of the game itself, but the Rockstar Mint PC storefront and client, Rockstar Games Launcher (RGL).
Since it’s a very new client, bugs were to be expected, but while crashing at launch is arguably the biggest PC game launch of the year, it’s an unfortunate acid test. Developers have already released several updates to RGL that resolve issues for many but there are still users who want to use RDR .cannot start.
Apart from the launcher, the game also proved unusually crash-prone for many gamers. We’re not in either of these camps, with the game running pretty stable even on our dated gaming rig with the following specs. For CPU we have an Intel i5-4690, 16GB DDR3 RAM coupled with a five-year-old Nvidia GTX 970 GPU. Hardly a spirited monster rig. Like many other PC titles, the unlimited number of PC configurations makes it very difficult to say what type of hardware crashes or doesn’t allow games to start. Rockstar has released several patches for both the launcher and the game so far, so we’re confident any issues will surface soon.
Once you can actually start and play the game, you will be greeted by an exemplary PC port. Unlocked framerates, ultra-wide and multi-monitor support, HDR display support, and a swath of game settings put a smile on my PC gamer’s face. Whether it’s the upscale 60s or the pristine quality of the 60s, Red Dead Redemption 2 continues the great amount of setting rockstar’s previous PC port GTA V, allowing you to customize both the technical and gameplay aspects the way you want. Huh. Before getting into the technical side, let’s take a look at some of the other choice PC-centric features.
As a console port, playing Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC with the controller works flawlessly as expected. For an incomprehensible reason, Rockstar isn’t offering button customization, though using them. We hope this is going to add up with an update very soon. Thankfully, when it comes to mouse and keyboard, users have complete control over button assignments. And you’ll need to, because of the game’s many mechanics and more immersive ambitions, to have a laundry list of commands you can issue to your player character at any time. Context-sensitive deviations only make the beginning more complicated. It’s not some game session that doesn’t trim my muscle memory, but I’m reminded of the good old days of PC gaming, when many titles would come with keyboard overlays.
It’s totally fine to play with a controller on PC but with the landing of RDR2 on PC, we think the mouse and keyboard add so much to the gameplay experience that we at least have our heartfelt advice that you give it a try. It really changes the way you play more often, not for the better. It won’t come as a surprise that with the use of a mouse any type of activity that requires smooth and pinpoint movement is not only easily achieved, but can also give criminals a true sense of humor. It’s more fun to blast like a gunman. Wrist.

The ability to switch to first person mode was already available on consoles and it becomes a natural fit on PC with a mouse. Combat and hunting feel at home with this approach on PC. I ended up enjoying the cutscenes, horseback riding, and melee in third-person, while switching to first-person early in the game when in a shootout or going hunting. Adjustable field-of-view sliders take the experience beyond the console.
RDR2The console version of K was notoriously the target of criticism for its unusually long input lag (the time between pushing a button and the game recognizing commands), but this port has been improved. This welcome improvement is naturally the result of lower latency computer monitors, higher framerates and more fluid mouse movement on consoles. With adjustable auto-targeting, fans of any input device have the best of both worlds.
That wasn’t entirely true when I said that Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC is very similar to the earlier console counterparts. PC gamers get a great new addition with a great photo mode. With the press of a button, players can freeze on-screen actions that open an intuitive UI. Here, you can freely move the camera around a designated area of Arthur with your mouse or controller. Rockstar has incorporated a plethora of features into the Photo Mode to create awesome snapshots. You can zoom in or out, use different lenses, roll the camera for added spectacle, and even adjust the exposure to lighten the image or darken it. .
This way, you can create dramatic scenes with very little effort. With all these tools turned off, there are dozens of post-effects image filters that give your shots a wide array of extra ambiance. Once you are satisfied, you can take a picture and upload it to Rockstar Social Club. Images shot with the in-game tools aren’t saved locally to your PC, but you can certainly use another program to take a screenshot in photo mode and share it. All in all, I spent hours trying to capture just the right moment or enhance the atmosphere with this deep toolset. There is no question that enthusiastic users will be able to capture and share awe-inspiring photos.
When it comes to the technical makeup of Red Dead Redemption 2, we’re looking at the first true next-gen iteration of the Rage Engine, flexing our muscles at the computer. Since then GTA IV, Midnight Club LA, Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3 and GTA V have all been using the Rage engine.
After playing RDR 2 on PC, GTA V’s roots stick to last-gen systems and it still makes an appearance on current-gen and PC. This is the first and seemingly the only RAGE-powered game developed with the power and features of current-gen consoles in mind. Playing on PC, this is the first time we get to see the true potential of the Rez without the throes of the low-cost fixed-hardware constraints of the PS4 and Xbox One.
Just as on consoles, Red Dead Redemption 2 features gorgeous models with extremely detailed texture work. The lighting is a generation. Even with volumetric lighting from GTAV, every scene is matched with the utmost fidelity. When your PC is up to the task, that is. When GTA V landed on PC in 2015, the game it was originally developed for the console generation had already come to a conclusion that caused the game to perform well on modest hardware at higher framerates and resolutions. The RDR 2 is another bag entirely as it arrived in the middle of the current gen where both the PS4 and Xbox One offered much higher value-to-performance value.
To put it simply, RDR2 on PC could be a much more PC title than GTA V ever had for top-notch hardware. If you ever go into the Settings menu with the mindset of dialing High or Ultra, you’ll end up with compromised performance around the 30fps mark. And that’s more than the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro with a beefy CPU/GPU combo. Be prepared to at least dial down a few settings for medium to rapidly improve performance at a relatively low visual loss.
The silver lining here is that even though lo, the game still manages to look pretty – apart from an option setting. texture quality. Anything below the Ultra is also a step below the console versions, which is a real shame for any GPU with low VRAM. You want at least 4GB of VRAM in your graphics card. Not only does this allow you to use Ultra Texture, but it also enables better shading, texture filtering, distances, and lighting.
Achieving the gold standard of 60fps is within the realm of possibility even on moderate hardware. Concessions are naturally high here, but there are so many dialogues to begin with. Most settings can be easily dialed down to medium or low without experiencing any significant loss in visual quality, improving the scene only marginally.
Some notable settings that improbably tank performance are reflection, MSAA, water quality, and volumetrics. We highly suggest keeping them either off or low for massive performance gains. The Temporal Anti-Aliasing Implementation (TAA) is already highly effective at ironing out molasses at a low-performance cost. Lastly, the game is pretty noteworthy for running at 60fps in native resolution with respectable visuals. You just have to admit that, unlike many other games, Red Dead Redemption 2’s setting can go way beyond what’s on the market.
For a very close look at what each setting costs in terms of performance versus visual quality, I recommend taking a look at Digital Foundry’s excellent feature video.
The Verdict:
For the time I spend with Red Dead Redemption 2, it feels like the claims of having an awesome PC port are vastly exaggerated and often simply not true. Whether it’s the extensive customization options, modern technical feature set, or the deep, epic story, and immersive gameplay, RDR 2 is a must-play title on PC for fans of open-world games. Factoring in the large and passionate modding community on the platform, there’s no doubt that Red Dead Redemption 2 will become a mainstay in gamer’s libraries for PC for the foreseeable future. We can only gleefully imagine what modders would make for an already top-notch game.
