What Is NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a support program started by the Australian government to help people living with any significant or permanent impairment that dysfunctions their way of living. It aims to help them build independent lives and reach their goals by providing them necessary support. Participants can request the services they deem necessary for their condition, and NDIS allows the funding after assessing their request. NDIS funding is divided into three categories of budget designed for different support services.
Core Support: This budget category includes support that helps you with daily activities.
Capacity-Building Support: This category is designed to help you develop new skills and independence.
Capital Budget: This budget category is used for assistive technology and modifications needed to make independent living accessible for the participant.
NDIS Core Support
Participants often have difficulty performing their day-to-day activities. With the assistance with daily living, NDIS allows the participants to have support throughout their day to help them perform their routine tasks. You can have a support worker supervise your tasks, or you can have them do it on your behalf until you feel confident about performing it yourself. Here is some other support that is covered under the core support category.
Transport
Aside from assistance with daily living, NDIS also provides participants with sufficient funds for transport. For different reasons, it can be difficult for some NDIS participants to travel by public transport. They might not feel confident enough to travel with strangers, or they can have difficulty adjusting to the seats. Either way, public transport can be a bad choice for them. Hence, NDIS provides funding to commute to work, school, or community activities. If you want to travel for your goal, you can use your NDIS funding for transport in this category.
Consumables
Consumables are products that you need in your daily life. It does not include any high-tech and expensive technology products. You can use the funding in the Capital budget for those, but you can buy low-cost assistive technology with this budget category. Core Support is designed to make daily living easier for the participants. Hence, any low-cost technology that makes independent living easier for you can be bought with this funding.
Assistance With Community Activities
NDIS participants also need to socialise with new people to develop new interests and confidence. Community participation is also a part of daily living for some participants. Hence, NDIS allows funding to help them participate in their social activities and meet new people. Participants can also have their support worker assist them in these community meetings if they don’t feel confident enough.
Among the three budgets available under NDIS, Core Support is the most flexible category. You cannot use the funding in Capacity-Building Support and Capital Budget for anything else besides the things they are designed for. However, Core Support does not put any such restriction. You can use your Core Support budget for support from different budget categories.
Suppose you didn’t get to use your fund for transport enough times, and now you are left with the funding; you can spend it on support under Capacity-Building or Capital budget. But make sure you only spend it on the support allowed in the other two categories. NDIS does not allow you to spend your funding on something unrelated to your goals or disability.
